Why is Crate so much cheaper than AWS API Gateway or Kong?

We own our hardware. Most gateways are just software layers running on top of rented cloud instances (AWS EC2), meaning you pay a markup on top of their markup.

We run Crate on bare metal servers in our own rack. We don't pay the "Cloud Tax" on CPU cycles or RAM, and we pass those massive savings directly to you.

How exactly do you calculate "Data Transfer"?

We charge for Total Throughput. This is the sum of all Inbound (Ingress) and Outbound (Egress) traffic flowing through the gateway.

The Math: If a user uploads a 1GB file and you send a 1GB response, that counts as 2GB of usage.

The Benefit: Because our overage rate ($0.01/GB) is ~9x lower than the industry standard for Egress alone, you save money regardless of traffic direction.

Do you charge for the number of API requests?

Never. We believe taxing API calls punishes efficient architecture (like IoT heartbeats or polling). With Crate, you pay for the "pipe" (bandwidth), not the "packets" (requests).

Send 100 requests or 100 million—if they fit in your bandwidth tier, they cost the same.

What happens if I exceed my plan's limit?

Nothing breaks. We don't throttle your traffic or show error pages. We simply bill you for the overage at the end of the month at a flat rate of $0.01 per GB.

You can monitor your current usage anytime in the dashboard, but we will never take your API offline for being successful.

How do you handle SSL/TLS certificates?

Fully automatically. When you point a domain to Crate, we use Let's Encrypt to provision a certificate in seconds. We handle the challenges, the renewals, and the secure storage. We also support strict TLS versions and modern cipher suites out of the box.
